HGF是肝脏再生过程中至关重要的有丝分裂原，尤其是在肝部分切除术和其他肝损伤后。
HGF存在于动物和人体内多种组织和细胞中，主要来源于肝脏(肝窦内表面的吞噬细胞)、内皮细胞、成纤维细胞、贮脂细胞、肺脏内皮细胞以及恶性肿瘤细胞。胰腺、肠、甲状腺、脑、颌下腺等组织也能合成和分泌HGF，机体内HGF首先以无活性的单链蛋白（HGF/SF）形式分泌，经肝细胞生长因子激活因子切割成成熟的有活性的异二聚体HGF。此外，HGF在促进肝细胞再生的同时参与还能作用于上皮细胞、造血细胞、血管内皮细胞等多种细胞，是一种可调节多种细胞生长、运动和形态发生的多功能因子，在肝脏类器官的培养过程中发挥重要作用。
